Polycarboxylate cement (zinc polycarboxylate) is a widely used dental material for cementation (luting) of crowns, bridges, inlays, orthodontic bands/brackets, and as a cavity base/liner. It is known for good adhesion to tooth structure and low pulp irritation.
1. Indications & Contraindications
Indications:
- Luting: Permanent cementation of metal/ceramic crowns, bridges, inlays, orthodontic brackets.
- Base/Liner: Under amalgam, composite, or glass-ionomer restorations.
- Temporary fillings (especially in deciduous teeth).
Contraindications:
- Direct pulp capping (not for direct contact with pulp tissue).
- Patients with known allergy to any components.
- Not for high-stress load-bearing permanent fillings.
2. Tools & Materials Needed
- Polycarboxylate cement (powder + liquid, or powder + water for modified types)
- Glass slab (cooled) or polymer mixing pad
- Stainless steel or plastic spatula
- Measure scoop (usually supplied)
- Cotton pellets, explorer, scaler
- Isolation: Cotton rolls / rubber dam
3. Step-by-Step Usage Guide
A. Preparation (Tooth & Restoration)
- Clean the preparation: Remove all debris, saliva, and temporary cement.
- Etch (optional for some ceramics): Follow manufacturer’s instructions.
- Dry lightly: Do not desiccate (over-dry) the dentin; leave slightly moist.
- Clean the restoration intaglio: Abrade slightly if needed, degrease, air-dry.
B. Dispensing Powder & Liquid (Critical!)
- Fluff powder: Invert the bottle and shake to aerate.
- Scoop powder: Overfill the scoop, then level with the spatula (do not compress).
- Dispense liquid: Hold vertically, squeeze gently for uniform drops.
Standard Ratios (follow your brand’s IFU):
- Cementation (luting): 1 scoop powder : 2 drops liquid → thick cream consistency
- Base/liner/temporary: 1 scoop powder : 1 drop liquid → putty consistency
C. Mixing Technique (30 seconds MAX!)
- Place powder and liquid on a cool, dry glass slab (slows set).
- Divide powder into 2–3 portions.
- Incorporate first portion: Mix into liquid until smooth (≈10 sec).
- Add remaining portions: Blend quickly to a smooth, glossy, cream/putty mix.
- Total mixing time: 20–30 seconds only.
- Working time: ~60–90 seconds (room temp).
D. Application & Seating
- For cementation:
- Coat the entire internal surface of the restoration thinly.
- Seat crown/bridge firmly with finger pressure or bite force.
- Hold for 1–2 minutes; do not move.
- Remove excess cement at the margins immediately with an explorer/floss.
- For base/liner:
- Place into the cavity; adapt to dentin; trim before full set.
E. Setting & Finishing
- Setting time in mouth: ~5–7 minutes.
- After 5–10 minutes:
- Remove any remaining excess with scaler.
- Check margins; polish if needed.
4. Key Tips & Precautions
- Speed is critical: Mix fast; work quickly.
- Do not add more powder/liquid once mixing starts.
- Keep liquid bottle tightly closed to prevent evaporation/thickening.
- Cool glass slab extends working time.
- Low solubility: Avoid prolonged exposure to saliva before full set.
- Biocompatible: Gentle on pulp; good for deep cavities (use liner if <1mm to pulp).
5. Troubleshooting
- Mix too thick: Too much powder or liquid evaporated.
- Mix too thin: Too much liquid → weak cement, long set.
- No adhesion: Tooth too dry/contaminated; improper mixing.
- Excess flash: Remove early before full set.
