What is the Dental Lab Silicone Impression Materials

(Summary description)

Information

I. Material Definition and Core Value

Dental laboratory silicone rubber is a high-molecular elastic material primarily composed of polysiloxane. Through room-temperature or high-temperature vulcanization, it forms an elastomer with excellent physical and mechanical properties. As a key material in precision manufacturing, its core value lies in three major advantages: accurate replication, stable sealing, and environmental adaptability. It is widely used in dental restoration, industrial mold making, construction sealing, and other technical applications. Particularly in dental laboratories, it is indispensable for denture fabrication, model duplication, and occlusal adjustment.

II. Core Performance Advantages

  • Wide Temperature Adaptability: Standard types maintain elasticity within -60°C to 260°C, while low-phenyl silicone rubber offers superior cold resistance, with a brittle point as low as -120°C. High-temperature vulcanization types can withstand short-term exposure up to 300°C.

  • Excellent Mechanical Properties: Tensile strength ranges from 0.8–2.0 MPa, elongation at break between 250% and 500%, and elastic recovery rate ≥70%. It retains bonding integrity after hot water immersion and thermal cycling, with no signs of damage.

  • Chemical Stability: Resistant to aging, UV radiation, and acid-base corrosion, with mass loss ≤6%. Performance degradation is minimal over long-term use.

  • Process Compatibility: Two-component materials are easy to mix (e.g., ZETALABOR products require only 30 seconds of kneading for uniform blending), with a working time of about 2 minutes and a curing time of approximately 6 minutes, meeting the efficiency demands of laboratory workflows.

III. Typical Applications in Dental Laboratories

  • Model Duplication: Accurately replicates plaster models and denture bases without the need for isolation treatment.

  • Temporary Restoration Fabrication: Serves as a template material for resin restoration molding.

  • Occlusal Adjustment: Used to create articulator positioning templates, ensuring occlusal precision of restorations.

  • Gingival Shaping: Removable gingival templates assist in achieving optimal marginal adaptation for complete dentures.

IV. Usage Specifications and Standard References

  • Mixing Ratio: Strictly follow product instructions, as uneven mixing may lead to incomplete vulcanization.

  • Environmental Control: Optimal room temperature is 23°C. Higher temperatures accelerate curing, while lower temperatures extend molding time.

  • Safety Precautions: Avoid skin and eye contact with catalysts; wearing gloves during operation is recommended.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in a sealed container at 5–27°C, with a shelf life of up to 36 months. Avoid direct sunlight, high temperatures, and humid environments.
