Introduction of Medical Dental Non-Woven Sponges

I. Product Definition

Medical non-woven sponges are sheet materials primarily made from medical-grade non-woven fabric. They are produced through processes such as cutting, folding, packaging, and sterilization. Unlike traditional textiles (e.g., gauze woven from warp and weft yarns), they are fabric-like materials formed by directly consolidating fibers using physical or chemical methods.

II. Key Features and Advantages

  • Soft and Breathable: The loose fiber structure effectively maintains gas exchange between the wound and the external environment, preventing stuffiness and moisture, which is conducive to healing.

  • High Fluid Absorbency: Quickly absorbs wound exudate, blood, tissue fluid, etc., keeping the wound relatively dry.

  • Lint-Free and Non-Shedding: Compared to traditional gauze, the non-woven structure is stable, generating minimal fiber lint during use and changing, thus avoiding contamination and irritation of the wound by foreign particles.

  • Soft Texture: Gentle on new granulation tissue and delicate skin, reducing pain and secondary injury during dressing changes.

  • Cost-Effective: Relatively low production cost, making it an ideal choice for disposable medical consumables.

  • Diverse Specifications: Can be produced in various sizes, thicknesses, and packaging forms for different applications.

  • Safe and Sterile (refers to sterile products): Sterilized by ethylene oxide or irradiation, individually packaged, ready to use upon opening, effectively preventing infection.

III. Main Applications

Medical non-woven sponges have a wide range of applications, primarily including:

  • Wound Care:

    • Wound Covering: Used as a primary dressing to cover and protect various wounds such as surgical incisions, abrasions, cuts, burns, and scalds.

    • Absorbing Exudate: Used as a secondary dressing, placed over drain sites or heavily exuding wounds to absorb excess fluid.

    • Cleaning and Disinfection: Moisten with disinfectants like iodophor or alcohol for cleaning and disinfecting skin and wounds.

  • Medical Procedures:

    • Surgical Draping: Used as disposable surgical towels or aperture drapes to provide a sterile field for surgery.

    • Instrument Lining: Placed under medical instruments to maintain their cleanliness and sterility.

    • Wiping/Blood Staunching: Used for applying pressure to stop bleeding after injections, blood draws, etc.

  • Personal and Home Care:

    • For handling minor daily wounds.

    • As a substitute for cotton pads or facial cleansing cloths (ensure the product is chemically untreated and safe).

    • Cleaning glasses, electronic device screens, etc. (utilizing its lint-free property).

IV. Common Specifications and Models

  • Size: Common sizes include 5cm x 5cm, 5cm x 7cm, 7.5cm x 7.5cm, 9cm x 10cm, 10cm x 10cm, 10cm x 20cm, etc. Larger sizes are available for specific areas.

  • Thickness and Ply: Typically available in 4-ply, 6-ply, 8-ply, 12-ply, etc. More plies generally mean higher absorbency and thickness.

  • Folding Style: Usually folded into squares for easy deployment and use.

  • Packaging:

    • Sterile Individually Packaged: Each sponge is individually sealed in a paper-plastic pouch or composite bag, intended for situations requiring high sterility.

    • Non-Sterile Bulk Packaged: Multiple sponges packaged together, more cost-effective, suitable for daily cleaning where sterility is not critical or for use as absorbent padding.

V. Main Materials

  • Spunbond Non-Woven Fabric: Good strength, relatively stiff hand feel, often used where some support is needed.

  • Spunlace Non-Woven Fabric: The most mainstream material for medical non-woven sponges currently. It is very soft, strong, lint-free, has a texture close to textiles, and is gentle and non-irritating to the skin.

  • SMS Non-Woven Fabric: Composed of a Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond trilaminate, it offers excellent fluid barrier properties (fluid resistance). Often used for surgical gowns, aperture drapes, etc., and also used in some high-end dressings.

VI. Usage Instructions (Using Sterile Products as an Example)

  1. Preparation: Wash hands thoroughly. Prepare necessary disinfectants and tape.

  2. Check Packaging: Ensure the packaging is intact and within its validity period.

  3. Open Packaging: Carefully tear open along the notch, avoiding contamination of the inner sponge.

  4. Remove Sponge: Use sterile forceps or clean hands to remove the sponge directly.

  5. Cover Wound: Gently place the sponge over the cleaned and disinfected wound.

  6. Secure: Properly secure it with medical tape or a bandage.

  7. Replacement: Change regularly based on the amount of wound exudate. Replace immediately if the sponge becomes saturated, contaminated, or displaced.

VII. Precautions

  • Distinguish Between Sterile and Non-Sterile: For open wounds, especially surgical incisions, burns, etc., sterile individually packaged products must be used. Non-sterile products are only for cleaning, applying pressure, or situations where sterility is not critical.

  • Single Use Only: Reuse is strictly prohibited to avoid cross-contamination.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place free from corrosive gases. Avoid direct sunlight.

  • Allergic Reactions: In rare cases, individuals might be allergic to the non-woven material or components from its processing. Discontinue use immediately if redness, swelling, or itching occurs.

  • Specific Wounds: For complex wounds with deep infection or heavy exudate, medical non-woven sponges might only serve as a secondary dressing. More specialized functional dressings (e.g., hydrocolloid, foam dressings) should be used under a doctor's guidance.
